PRODUCER LUC DÉRY RECEIVES INAUGURAL CFTPA PRODUCER AWARD AT THE TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
Toronto – Industry Initiatives at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Canadian Film and Television Production Association (CFTPA) announced today that Luc Déry is the recipient of the inaugural CFTPA Producer Award.
Déry's independent production company micro_scope has produced such films as CONGORAMA by Philippe Falardeau, which is a Special Presentation at the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival, FAMILIA by Louise Archambault (winner City TV Award for best Canadian First Feature in 2005 at the Festival and winner of the Claude Jutra Award for Best First Feature), TIRESIA by Bertrand Bonello, and A PROBLEM WITH FEAR by Gary Burns. micro_scope is in production on CONTINENTAL, UN FILM SANS FUSIL, a first feature film by Stéphane Lafleur in the fall.
"The CFTPA looks forward to continuing to celebrate and encourage Canada's independent producers in the coming years with this and other CFTPA initiatives," said Guy Mayson, President & CEO, CFTPA. "I'm very pleased with our jury's decision to recognize Luc's body of work and overall contribution to the film industry."
"On behalf of the CFTPA Board of Directors, I would like to congratulate Luc on receiving the first ever CFTPA Producer Award. Producing a Canadian feature film requires talent, tenacity and vision, and we're happy to give this Award to a producer who possesses all of these traits," said Ira Levy, Chair, Board of Directors, CFTPA.
Déry was selected by the CFTPA Producer Award's jury which was chaired by producer David Hamilton (WATER, BOLLYWOOD/HOLLYWOOD), and included filmmaker Norman Jewison, Shelley Gillen, Head of Creative Affairs at Movie Central, and producer Pierre Even (C.R.A.Z.Y.). Déry receives a cash prize of $10,000 CAD from the CFTPA. The Award also includes $1,000 of film stock from Fujifilm Motion Picture. The announcement was made at a special industry event.
"Déry was chosen out of the 50 eligible producers as someone who manifested all of the qualities, talents and characteristics which the jury had defined as critical to foster artistic, critical and box office success for Canadian films," said Hamilton. "The submissions made to the jury provided powerful evidence that we have reason for great optimism about the strength of the producer community across the entire country."
"The intent of the CFTPA Producer Award is to give the recipient the profile and attention they deserve, and build momentum on their projects during the Festival," said Kelley Alexander, Director of Industry Initiatives. "The Festival provides an excellent and dynamic opportunity for filmmakers to network and take their projects to the next level. We're very pleased with our partnership with the CFTPA and with the success of the Award, and hope it will continue into the future so we can continue to support our industry."
The CFTPA promotes and stimulates the Canadian production industry. As a non-profit trade association, the CFTPA represents almost 400 film, television and interactive media companies across the country.
