On n’attendait pas nécessairement grand-chose du ressortissant ontarien Adam Waito. Anciennement du combo synth-rock Telefauna, son premier opus solo, Amethyst Amulet (2008), était une affaire indie pop canadiana honnête, mais austère. Ici, le Montréalais a transformé sa proposition en charmant trip pop à la fois épuré et opulent. Tout en claviers chaleureux et en ambiances psychédéliques, Flickering Flashlight garde un petit mordant post-Pavement tout en affichant un fort cachet sixties. Beaucoup de bons moments, dont l’irrésistiblement accrocheuse The Country et la funky Gitchee Gumee Yeah Yeah. Capté en appartement et en local de répétition, l’album n’en présente pas moins une réalisation hors pair.
